Mackenzie Schmalshof is the Administrative Assistant. She became interested in the healthcare field after working as a Research Assistant for the HIV Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of Iowa and plans on pursing a Master’s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. In her spare time, she likes writing short stories, playing trivia with her friends, traveling, and hanging out with her cat.
Mackenzie enjoys patient interaction and making sure their needs are met by organizing medical charts, scheduling, and providing customer service. She is a wonderful part of our Physmed team.
David Harper is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy providing PhysMed patients with quality rehabilitative care. He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Iowa. David also holds a B.S. in Exercise Science from Iowa State University. David has experience in a variety of settings including inpatient care in the hospital, acute rehab, skilled nursing, outpatient and home health.
As a native of Iowa City, David is proud to be part of an organization providing home health services to his fellow community members. He values in-home rehabilitation that allows patients to practice skills in their most familiar and relevant setting: home. David is passionate about empowering his patients to overcome their physical limitations in order to maintain safety and independence in their home.
David resides in Coralville with his wife where he enjoys spending time getting outdoors. On any given evening you can find him tossing a frisbee or playing board games with family.
Director of Clinical Services
Debbi Smith is the Director of Clinical Services. Debbi began her 20-year nursing career as an Emergency Department nurse before moving forward to gain experience in Geriatrics and Disease Management. Debbi received her nursing degree from Excelsior College, and she also has a degree in Business Administration from Florida College of Business. In her spare time, Debbi enjoys cooking, reading and gardening with her husband.
The ability to help patients receive quality health care in the area of nursing and therapy while being able to stay in their own home is important to her. Debbi has always enjoyed caring for the elderly and being a staunch patient advocate, which serves her well at Physmed.
Speech Language Pathologist
Michelle Krieger is our Speech Language Pathologist at Physmed Iowa Home Healthcare. Her goal is to provide compassionate care to all of her patients, and make sure each one is being cared for with top quality services for a quicker recovery. Michelle has always had a special place in her heart to help those in need and really loves providing the services in the patient’s home where it is more functional and comfortable for them. She has worked in a variety of settings including inpatient, outpatient, skilled care, long term care, and home health care for pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.
Michelle obtained her Associate’s Degree at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa. She then transferred to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, as well as her Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology. She went on to further her education by becoming certified in Orofacial Myology where she is in the process of starting her own private practice as an Orofacial Myologist.
Michelle resides in the Quad Cities with her significant other, Mike, and their 7 children. Michelle was a foster parent for 9 years and adopted 5 children. She is currently a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA worker) where she volunteers to assist children who are in foster care with the Department of Human Services. She also volunteers at King’s Harvest Homeless Shelter. She likes to attend concerts, go to garage sales, and help those who are in need.
Physical Therapist Assistant
As a Physical Therapist Assistant, Skyler strives to restore function and decrease pain by providing high quality therapy interventions related directly to meeting the individual’s goals. Skyler has always had a fascination of how and why our bodies work in the way they do. He is driven to be a lifelong learner always intrigued by new technology and techniques to help better improve outcomes.
Skyler obtained an Associate Degree of Applied Science in the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Kirkwood Community College. Prior to becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant, he graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Physiology.
Skyler grew up in Marion, Iowa before moving to Iowa City to complete his Bachelor’s degree. Family is extremely important, and he enjoys spending time with his younger brothers. Skyler is passionate about being an outdoorsman. Every year he explores new state parks and takes on new adventures.
